# Free online teleprompter

Paste your script, pick a reading pace and let the words roll. Fullscreen, mirrored for glass rigs, on any screen.

## How to use this teleprompter

Paste or type your script into the script box, or open a plain-text file. The prompter screen shows it straight away, laid out as it will be in fullscreen: text size and margins are a share of the screen width, so lines break in the same places on a phone, a laptop or a large monitor.

Set the speed in words per minute. The prompter counts the words in your script and scrolls so that the last line reaches the reading line after about as long as it takes to say them at that pace. Start a little slower than you think and adjust with the arrow keys as you read; if you know your own pace, [measure it on the speech length page](https://ripplebrief.buzz/speech-length-calculator/).

Press Start. After the countdown the text rolls up towards the reading line. Keep your eyes there and let the words come to you. While the prompter runs it asks the browser to keep the screen awake (the Screen Wake Lock feature); where that is not supported, turn off auto-lock before a long take.

### Mirror and flip

A glass beam-splitter prompter, the kind that sits in front of a camera lens, shows the screen reflected in angled glass, which reverses it left to right. Turn on Mirror so the reflection reads normally. Flip mirrors the text top to bottom, for rigs that reflect the screen from above; with both on, the text is turned round for a screen mounted upside down.

### Keyboard and touch controls

- **Space**: Start or pause
- **↑ ↓**: Faster or slower, 5 wpm at a time
- **← → or Page Up Page Down**: Back or forward a few lines
- **Home or R**: Back to the top
- **+ −**: Bigger or smaller text
- **M V**: Mirror or flip
- **F / Esc**: Enter or leave fullscreen

On a touch screen, tap the prompter to start or pause and drag it to scroll. In fullscreen, the buttons along the bottom change speed and text size.

## Questions

**Is the teleprompter free, and is my script uploaded?**

It is free, with no sign-up, and your script never leaves your device. The prompter runs entirely in your browser. Your script and settings are saved only in this browser's local storage, so they are still here next time; Clear removes the script.

**How do I use it with a glass teleprompter or a phone rig?**

Open the page on the device that sits under the glass, turn on Mirror and press Fullscreen. If the words still look upside down in the glass, turn on Flip as well. Start and pause with a tap on the screen, or with a wireless keyboard.

**What speed should I choose?**

Around 130 to 150 words per minute suits most presentations. Begin there and adjust while you read: the up and down arrow keys change the speed by 5 wpm without stopping. If you have measured your own pace, use that number.

**Why does the text look small on my phone?**

Text size is a share of the screen width, so every screen fits the same words on each line. On a small screen, raise the size or narrow the margins. Fewer words per line are easier to read at a distance.
